Why Consider a Home Business Opportunity?

When is a Turnkey Business your Best Option?

Regardless if your definition of a home business opportunity includes franchises and/or independent companies, turnkey enterprises allow you to assume ownership of a functioning business with a proverbial "turn of the key." While the amount of work that will be done by the head company to assist you in this transaction will vary based on the details surrounding the purchase of the business, such turnkey operations have several general components associated with them that make them ideal career options for certain entrepreneurs to pursue.

To assist you in determining whether a turnkey business opportunity is the best route for your career path to follow, evaluate how closely you identify with the following statements.

  • I have an idea about the types of businesses that interest me, but I don't have a specific product or service idea to market. A business opportunity allows you to benefit from the business ingenuity of others. From the identification of a niche market to the proper selection of goods and/or services to be provided, a turnkey business is a "package deal" that provides specific motion to your general plans.
  • I have many of the skills needed to run a business, but I need help getting it started. Many people simply need to rely initially on others to develop their company. Maybe your skills are better suited to managing a project that's already been implemented; you're capable of running the show once someone else has laid the foundation. It's not because you're a better follower than you are a leader. You simply need the necessary guidance to get you off to a good start and/or to provide you with input on how to proceed alone. Let the "experts" secure funds, obtain the licenses/permits, etc. You'll take over once the path has been cleared and paved.
  • I have the desire and drive to run a business, but I don't have the time and energy to get the business started. Many people have a deep-seated desire to own and manage a business, but their current priorities and/or commitments don't allow them the flexibility to do so from a time and energy standpoint. How then, you ask, do they find the time and energy to run a business once it's operational? Think of it in terms of people who are busy making a living holding down their current job and who simply can't find the time and/or energy to do more work. They will however have the necessary resources once the business is ready to open. It's oftentimes a matter of wanting to make a smooth transition without having to burn the candle at both ends to arrive at such a point.
  • I don't mind receiving input and/or being guided through various stages of starting and/or maintaining my business. Decisions pertaining to such concerns as product selection, inventory acquisition, site location, and operational procedures have to be made for all business opportunities. Turnkey businesses however have often had such decisions made prior to you assuming control of the company. While some business opportunities allow you to chart almost all aspects of the future of the company, others, especially franchises, stay involved throughout the life of the venture. The bottom line is that business opportunities vary greatly in the level and duration of input that's provided by the parent company.

After reading these statements, are you comfortable with the ways in which a turnkey operation offers valuable assistance to ensure your success or does it all just sound like a loss in control and power that will ultimately lead to you becoming discouraged? If these assertions come close to positively describing your attitudes associated with starting a business, you might want to give serious consideration to purchasing a turnkey home business opportunity. Whether a franchise, an existing company, or a business opportunity in its "truest" definition (refer to our article entitled "What Is a Business Opportunity?"), your entrepreneurial spirit might best be served by the features and functions of a turnkey venture.

Good luck finding the perfect home business opportunity!
