What To Do If You Get Discouraged
Five Methods to Find Your Way Back from the Brink of Business Despair
Running your own business can be a test of character. Long hours, unexpected hurdles, too little cash, and too much stress can bring even the strongest of spirits to their business knees. Even when things are going well, business owners can become discouraged due to such factors as little social contact, constant worry about the future, or lingering doubts about their capabilities to successfully manage the company.
If you find yourself in such a situation, it would be extremely beneficial to identify the reason(s) for your increasing level of discouragement. By doing so, you have a better chance of solving the problem, as well as progressing into a more personally-fulfilling stage of being a business owner. That in turn can lead to an increased level of success for the business itself.
Rest assured that being discouraged is a common occurrence when faced with the often-daunting tasks associated with being a business owner. While the solution to the problem often rests with the specific cause(s), we'd like to offer you a few general suggestions of how to find a way out of your potentially overwhelming entrepreneurial despair.
Anticipate and plan accordingly - Perhaps this advice reaches you with a sense of "too little, too late." If not, and you're still in the planning stages of your business, take note of any potential sources and/or situations that might lead you to become discouraged and do what you can to prevent and/or avoid such occurrences. If your business is already up and running, make note of what's caused your dismay and be prepared for any future occurrences.
Ask for assistance - We know that it sounds clichéd, but don't be afraid to ask for help from others. Maybe you need professional advice from the Small Business Administration about how to handle a troubling aspect of your loan. Perhaps an accountant can guide you through the tax issues that are causing you to become discouraged. Maybe you simply need the ear of a fellow business owner to help you decide how to fire the employee that's been contributing to the problem. Friends and family can also be a vital support network during your times of disappointment and concern. You should even consider the assistance of life couches, career counselors, and professional medical therapists when necessary.
Give yourself a break - If distance can make the heart grow fonder, sometimes a little distance between you and your business can be a good thing. While we're not encouraging you to close up shop unexpectedly and to become a beach bum in Tahiti for a month, we would recommend that you get out of the office a little more if it's at all possible. If you have employees and/or business partners, delegate the task(s) that are causing you to become discouraged to those who can handle them better. Part of this solution also involves no longer berating yourself for becoming discouraged in the first place. Remember…good things happen to good people…even business owners.
Re-evaluate the situation and be honest with your appraisal - Ask yourself, "Are things really as bad as they seem?" If so, evaluate your options of how to solve the problem and begin working towards such a solution. Maybe you'll discover that things look less discouraging in the light of day when you're calm, focused, and rested. Part of being honest also involves evaluating your own role in having created this crisis. Did you do something that brought about these discouraging times? Was it a lack of forethought and/or action on your part that caused your despair? Only sincere honesty will help you out of your current situation and assist you in avoiding future times of being discouraged.
Rely on what's worked before - If any of your past work-experience caused you to be in a similar state, put into practice those tricks of the trade that helped you conquer your discouragement. While the responsibilities associated with owning a business can be exponentially greater than simply being an employee, many problems can be handled in the same manner.
Whatever you discover as the source of your discouragement, take comfort in knowing that with each hurdle you manage to conquer, your strength and ability to travel the path to success and happiness as a business owner becomes much easier to walk. Not to mention more enjoyable…
