Basic Secrets of Home Business Success

The Top 10 Tips to Ensure a Long Life for your Business

The popular cliché is that "success comes to those who wait." Instead of simply lounging around in your comfy office desk chair and waiting for your home-based business to succeed, we suggest that you invest a little time and energy into the following tasks. While some of these secrets to success (which are more common sense than treasured secrets) should be completed prior to your grand opening, others should be incorporated into your daily operations. By doing so, it's likely that your business will not only survive the first few critical years, but it will actually thrive for many years to come.

  1. Be thorough when identifying your niche - For some people, finding the right business idea is an easy task; they've identified a need that currently isn't being met by other companies. However, a more thorough analysis must be done to determine if such a need is merely a "passing fad" and/or whether a home-based office can meet the needs of the potential customers, as well as the needs of the business owner. If you're having a hard time defining your niche, don't be discouraged. As this decision has a tremendous impact on the success of your venture, allow yourself as much time as necessary to formulate that one great idea that will propel you forward for a long time to come.
  2. Don't be afraid to specialize - The critical task of choosing your area of specialization goes hand-in-hand with identifying your niche market. Many business owners are hesitant to focus on what they consider too narrow of a market; they instead attempt to do many things well. Seldom do such multi-faceted companies accomplish the goal of meeting the needs of all of their customers. By specializing, it's possible to become the very best at what you do. That factor alone can go a very long way in creating a successful business.
  3. Create a business plan - Most entrepreneurs are required to put together a written business plan to obtain financing. While this is perhaps one of the most time-consuming and tedious tasks associated with getting your business up and running, it is one of the most critical endeavors associated with having your business get off to a great start and keeping it there. If you're one of the lucky few that aren't required to put together a business plan, consider doing it anyways. A correctly constructed and well-researched plan requires you to identify a number of factors (e.g., your competitors, expenses, and marketing plan) that are critical in determining the overall success of your company. Think of it as "forced forethought" if you must, but do it anyways. You'll be very glad that you did.
  4. If possible, test market your idea before "getting in too deep" - Once you've identified your niche, determined your area of specialization, and drafted your business plan, it's time to put your ideas and estimates to the test. If there's a way to conduct a "trial run" to determine how your identified market responds to your business and the products and/or services that it provides, you would be wise to do so. Perhaps you can rent office space for a limited lease period. Maybe a kiosk at a local mall will provide you with critical customer input. Why not just test your business ideas from your home base of operation? You might discover that it's actually easier to get a large amount of feedback with fewer expenses by working outside of your home…at least until you identify the areas that need to be modified in your business approach.
  5. Have a support network in place and don't be afraid to use it - In the world of successful businesses, when the going gets tough, the tough get going to their support network. Thriving businesses understand the value of asking for assistance, in whatever form necessary (e.g., like-minded business owners, family members, and career coaches), long before it's too late to overcome any hurdles.
  6. If you have to err, be overcapitalized, not undercapitalized - Lack of financial resources is one of the leading causes of business failures. Maybe you already have what you believe to be a sufficient supply of cash on hand. Perhaps you're comfortable with the numbers that you've generated in the creation of your business plan and the test marketing that you've conducted. Even so, it never hurts to add in a buffer when considering taking out a business loan. Sure, you might end up paying more in interest over the lifetime of the loans that you acquire, but it beats not being able to make the required loan payments.
  7. Stay focused, but remain flexible - Any successful business owner will likely tell you that they've always kept their eye on the mission(s) and objective(s) associated with their business. Those same people will probably also admit to being willing to make changes or perhaps even change course when necessary, the key words being "when necessary." In other words, don't change your focus with each new trend and justify such fluctuations as your method of "staying current" (refer to #9 below). Always be ready to admit the need to make changes, but don't be easily influenced to do so by others without doing your own research.
  8. Treat everyone that you encounter with the utmost respect - Providing exceptional customer service isn't optional; it's a critical necessity. However, we're not just talking about treating your customers well. We're also talking about vendors, lenders, employees, the photocopy repairperson. You get the idea. Details surrounding the outstanding manner in which you treat the people you deal with will spread far and wide via word of mouth, the absolute best and cheapest form of advertising. When the secretary at your local branch of the Small Business Administration is in need of your services and/or products, he or she likely remember you and be more than happy to give their business to you.
  9. Stay current - Whatever your business niche is, be certain that you remain in the forefront with current trends, technology, products, etc. This not only allows you to meet the needs of your customers, but your company will likely operate at its maximum efficiency. Whether this means attending annual conferences, being a member of specific business organizations, and/or subscribing to (and actually reading) trade magazines, do whatever is necessary to position yourself as a leader in your chosen business field.
  10. Find a balance and don't allow anyone or anything to compromise it - It's wonderful to own a successful home-based business. However, when the office lights are turned off, the company telephone has stopped ringing, and the customers have all been served for the day, it's time to switch gears and allow yourself to enjoy the company of others or the silence of your own breathing. While a workaholic might consider them self to be successful, others might consider the same person to simply be a stressed-out workaholic. Set boundaries and don't deviate from them for anyone or for any reason, except in the event of an emergency. Whether it's friends showing up during business hours to chit-chat or it's customers calling after business hours, know when to say enough is enough. Take care of yourself and your business will be even more successful.

So now you know... it doesn't take a college degree, an IQ above 180, or a substantial amount of money in the bank to be successful at managing your own home-based business. The secret pathway to success is simply paved with a lot of hard work and common sense. Everyone can walk this route if he or she is simply willing to take that first step.

Good luck finding the perfect home business opportunity!
