Low Cost and Cost-Effective Ways to Market Your Home Based Business
Promote your Products and Sell your Services on a Bargain Budget
Advertising your home business is one of the best investments that you can make to ensure the success of your company. You could have the best product or service on the market, but unless people know that you exist, no one will be beating a trail to your door to partake in your offerings. Take comfort in knowing that the investment you make in marketing your home-based business doesn't have to be a small fortune.
We'd like to share a few low-cost, big-bang-for-your-buck methods to spread the word about your business. Some might be more appropriate for your specific company and/or business location. Choose what you think will work best for you and your venture and add a few of your own ideas to the list.
Give exceptional customer service to obtain free word-of-mouth advertising - The cheapest but best form of advertising that you can acquire is simply by treating your customers like the queens and kings that they are in relation to helping you meet your business goals. Don't stop with your customers though…be nice to the UPS delivery person, the secretary that answers the telephone at your accountant's office, the sales representatives for all of your vendors. If you don't have a good word-of-mouth reputation, you can spend all of the money in your bank account on advertising and you'll still see few, if any, positive results.
Place print ads in niche-market related materials - Print ads are seldom cheap, so it's important to target the ones that you do run. Many people believe that if their print ad is the biggest and the flashiest, it will create business regardless if it's an ad for vacuum cleaner sales and service that appears in a teddy bear collector's magazine. Guess again. Prior to putting your ad campaign together, spend some time identifying the media that your market is likely to get their hands on. If your business will likely be generated primarily from within your immediate community, make sure that your ads appear in local publications…just don't become yet another print ad lost amongst the many others sinking or swimming in a sea of ink.
Give a free presentation to people who might be interested in your products and/or services - If you've just opened your own landscaping business, consider giving a free lecture to local garden groups that are open to the public. Not all presentations have to be visual though. Are you trying to create a market for your catering services? Set up a booth at local events that allow you to promote your business and offer free samples to attendees. Give a little in the hopes of gaining a lot.
Sponsor a local group - Even if your company generates a substantial amount of its profits from outside of the general area, it's a good idea to give something back to the community where your business is located. Maybe the local Little League needs a new sponsor for one of their teams. Perhaps the town's Park Enhancement Committee is in need of donations to carry out their work. This type of a sponsorship will put your business logo in the public's line of view, whether on athlete's jerseys or bricks paving the new park pathways. Perhaps you'll drum up more local business than you imagined was possible.
Write an article about a topic related to the services and/or products that you provide - It doesn't matter if Better Homes and Garden Magazine purchases the rights to publish your feature story pertaining to interior design using only organic materials or the local newspaper simply agrees to print it for free. Cash is nice and so is a large audience, but it's the byline mentioning your business that you're looking for to drum up more business.
Use your car as a mobile billboard - Talk about hitting the pavement to stir up more business. If you don't mind adding a little personalization to your vehicle, consider having your company logo and contact information emblazoned on your door panels. If you want to have the option of removing the message at will, have magnetic signs created instead. Be prepared for those folks who stop you during your daily travels to ask you for your business card.
Set up a business website with one of the free or low-fee website hosts - Yes, such a service does exist. A quick internet search will literally yield pages of potential hosts to set up a free website for your company. While not always possible, try to find a host that aims to service your specific type of business. You'll likely be limited with space constraints, design elements, etc, but it's better to have a website presence than no presence at all…as long as it's free of spelling errors, etc and looks professional.
While it's possible to locate low-cost avenues of advertising, don't shortchange the time and energy that you put into creating your business promotions. Remember, it's not the size of the ad that counts but the power of the message that it conveys. Be creative with both the cost and the presentation of your business ad campaigns and you'll me pleased with the results.
