Do You Have What It Takes To Run A Home-Based Business?

Personal Traits and Property Requirements to Keep Your Home-Based Business Booming

Running a business is one thing; running a home-based business is something else altogether. Within our article entitled "Do You Have What It Takes to Be in Business for Yourself?", we list the most-often cited personal qualities associated with individuals who successfully go into business for themselves. A number of these traits become more important when one conducts their business from home and even more so when they're the only employee.

  • Able to set boundaries - This will be extremely important as family, friends, neighbors, etc will potentially enter your workspace at less than ideal times and hinder your business operations. You simply have to be comfortable asking for and insisting on respect for your specific work requirements.
  • Energetic - Chances are that you'll initially be the only worker to perform all of the tasks associated with your daily business operations. Some days you might feel like you're doing the work of an extraordinary number of people. You'll need excess amounts of energy to get you through such days.
  • Enjoys working alone - Again, chances are you'll be working alone. If you thrive on being a social butterfly, the transition to managing your home-based business could be quite a challenge. Such would also be the case for anyone who simply needs the company of others to be motivated, to receive immediate feedback, to bounce ideas around, etc.
  • Follows through as promised - Delegating isn't always an option for a home-based business owner. If it's just you in the office, all follow-up work will become your responsibility. Anything left undone at the end of the day will always be in your inbox the following morning.
  • Hard worker - Being the owner of a one-person company often results in you working harder than you've ever worked before. As previously mentioned, the energy required to operate a business from home could be staggering at times. Conducting your job from home can also mean that you never really leave your work at the office.
  • Independent - It almost seems trivial to mention that a person who chooses to work from their home is probably an independent spirit. However, this trait goes hand-in-hand with being comfortable working alone. If you need the presence of and/or input from others, a home-based business might not present you with the optimal work environment.
  • Initiates ideas, tasks, etc - If not for you, then who will it be? It's that simple.
  • Not afraid to ask for help when needed - While there might not be any employees within your new company to ask for help, the likelihood is that you're eventually going to need some form of assistance. Regardless if it's accounting services, legal advice, or supplier contact information, a home-based entrepreneur has to be comfortable acknowledging that they can't always do it by themselves. Even "traditional" or well-established home businesses need help every now and then.
  • Organized - Managing every detail of a home-based business will likely be your responsibility. If you're not organized, things could spiral out of control quickly. One forgotten meeting with a potential client could result in a significant loss in income and future referrals.
  • Perseveres - When the going gets tough, the home-based business owner truly has to keep on going. You can call in sick to work, but it's just not the same any more. The same tasks will simply be waiting for you upon your return.
  • Resourceful - In need of a "face lift" for your office space, but low on cash? How about a little sweat equity to get the job done? Need a certain product to satisfy your customer, but can't find a supplier? How about contacting a prior co-worker to track down the info? A truly successful home-based business owner never gives up turning over every stone to accomplish the job at hand.
  • Self-confident - If you don't have confidence in yourself to get the job done, don't expect to have those needs filled from an exterior source. Look within or consider looking elsewhere for a career.
  • Self-disciplined - Again…if not for you, then who?
  • Self-motivated - The fire simply has to come from within to burn the brightest and the longest. Being motivated will carry you through more hurdles than you can imagine.
  • Self-reliant - You have to be able to count on yourself to get all of the tasks at hand completed. There simply might not be anyone else to do it.
  • Self-starter - The third time is a charm…if not for you, then who? This is slightly different then initiating ideas and tasks. We're talking about who's going to get you to the office every day, even when things aren't going so well.
  • Strong communication skills, both spoken and written - If you can't successfully convey your business ideas, will there be anyone else in your office that can? If not, it's time to sharpen those communication skills…and the sooner, the better.
  • Strong support network whether family, friends, and/or other business people - If there's no one in your home office to pat you on the back for a job well done or to encourage you when you're in need of a pep talk, it's even more crucial that you have a support network in place.
  • Time management skills - Your time might be your own now, but it's even more critical that you know how best to manage it. Interruptions might be more likely from well-meaning family and friends; you might be more tempted to sleep in a little later or to watch a few minutes of television every once in a while. Be careful…time can pass even quicker when you're close to the comforts of home.

The success of your home-based business isn't completely dependent on your own personal traits. As is the case with "traditional" business operations, several other factors are of great importance. They include, but aren't limited to, the following:

  • Location, location, location - If your office isn't easily accessible, clearly visible, or conveniently located for customers, no matter how good your business plan or how novel your business idea is, you're level of success might be greatly reduced.
  • Sufficient space for your office - If you're trying to conduct business with clients, customers, and/or vendors in the middle of your living room where your children's toys are scattered about, chances are such people will question the dedication you have towards achieving your business objectives. As unfair as that might sound, put your self in their shoes. Wouldn't you prefer to do business with someone who has gone the extra step to show their commitment to themselves, as well as their clientele, by designating a portion of their home to their chosen profession?
  • Zoning restrictions - There's nothing worse than putting a significant amount of time, energy, and financial resources into getting your home-based business up and running only to find out that your neighborhood isn't zoned to allow the operation of such an enterprise. Do your homework and save yourself the heartbreak.

If you discover obstacles in being able to open a business from your home, don't give up. There are always options available to those who see opportunity in challenges. Whether you need to lease, rent, and/or purchase office property, or maybe even purchase a franchise, remember... where there's a will, there's a way.

Good luck finding the perfect home business opportunity!
