How to Avoid Common Pitfalls and Problems
Make the Trip to Self-Employment Success without any Pit Stops
Managing your own home business can be a rewarding adventure; one that not only leads you along a path full of wonderful surprises and uplifting moments, but one that is also paved with potential potholes and high hurdles to avoid and/or overcome. By having a game plan and being aware of the potential obstacles along the way, it's possible to actually enjoy the journey.
To ensure a smooth passage, we suggest that you incorporate the following tips into your way of doing business.
Anticipate the road that lies ahead - The best way to avoid trouble is to see it coming. Pay attention to the signs along the way and you'll be one-step ahead of any problems that might arise.
Consult with others whenever necessary - Having a support network is one thing; relying on it is another thing entirely. You should never be afraid to ask for input, advice, guidance, words of wisdom, or whatever else that you want to call it. You simply cannot foresee every problem that might occur any more than you can be expected to formulate a solution to every problem.
Don't assume that you know it all - If you're not required to know it all, why pretend that you do? You know the old saying about the word assume... it just makes an "a_ _ out of u and me." We all have something to learn from one another, so why not ask your support network to be your tutor every now and then?
Don't procrastinate - While some people seem to work better as the deadline draws nearer, it's simply not a good habit to get into when it comes to being responsible for managing a business. Eventually you'll miss a critical deadline and your company will pay the price, in many ways other than lost revenue.
Don't waste time - This is actually different from procrastinating. When you're wasting time, you're potentially not accomplishing any task that's relevant to increasing the success of your home business. That's why it's referred to as "wasted" time. It's simply getting you nowhere fast. It's time to get off the couch and stop snacking on potato chips while waiting for your vendor to deliver your order.
Have a solid business plan - Your business plan is your road map to success. Write it, read it, memorize it, refer to it often, and re-evaluate as necessary. It's like being willing to stop and ask for directions…it's critical to help you get where you're going and you'll actually get there faster and less frazzled. Without it, it's easy to become disoriented and to start aiming at irrelevant goals; it becomes easy to overspend and to under-perform.
Keep your focus - A business plan will go a long way to help you meet this goal. It's important though that you don't become swayed by the trend-of-the-month or the words of wisdom uttered by interfering in-laws who have no relevant insight whatsoever into the proper way of marketing your pet-sitting service.
Recognize and admit your strengths and weaknesses - Half the battle of being successful is in knowing what you do well and in recognizing what challenges you. It helps you to keep your focus, to not waste time, and to know when to consult with others. Sound familiar?
Re-evaluate your business position often - Last, but never least, always take the time and energy to evaluate your current business status on a regular basis. Whether you're comparing your actual cash flow with your initial cash flow projections in your business plan or whether you're re-evaluating the needs of the current market, you should always be willing to take a step back and to look at the big picture from your new position along the path to being successfully self-employed. Isn't it a great view?
