Finding a Successful Niche

Compartmentalizing your Business Career Choice

In the world of business, the decision that you make pertaining to the specific niche for your company can be one of the most critical elements affecting your overall success. Not sure what a niche is? Niche is defined as "the place, employment, or activity for which a person or thing is best fitted" (The Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2004). While it's important to determine what you personally are best suited for as a self-employed individual, it's just as important to find an idea/product/service that fills a unique market.

Many people are afraid to commit to a specific niche, as they believe that taking a general approach will provide them with more opportunities to serve a greater number of customers or clients. These are the people who make the mistake of equating niche marketing with having limited potential or being inflexible.

While it's not necessary to reinvent the wheel that your business will be focusing on servicing or selling, you do need to find a better way of doing what's already being done. Sound confusing? Let's look at an example.

As a diehard gardener who represents the average "green consumer," Rose Bush patronizes all of the local nurseries and never gives a second thought to traveling an hour or more to a garden center that she discover carries products that none of her surrounding resources have in stock. Her passion is water gardening, but none of the stores that she visits has a good range of supplies and/or is able to provide her with the information that she's seeking. She can order her water garden products via online or by catalogue, but the plants and fish never arrive in very good condition.

Rose Bush's market research indicates that there are considerable numbers of people in her targeted business area that are in the same situation with the same needs to be met. Sounds like there's a niche in the pond industry and Rose just might have what it takes to build a new business on the solid foundation of her passion. Not only will she be providing desired products, but she'll also be providing people with a local supplier, thereby minimizing their travel costs and potential losses due to shipping.

Think of finding your business niche as a great way of focusing your energy, time, skills, and resources on a customer that will closely associate with the products and/or services that you're offering. Your marketing strategy alone becomes streamlined when you find a special niche; you can outline the benefits that a client will experience if they conduct business with you and you can do so in a language that they'll understand.

Don't hesitate to differentiate yourself from the rest of the business world. While we wouldn't recommend that you go way out on a limb without doing some form of prior market research, we would encourage you to find a way to become an expert in your chosen field.

Don't let the process of finding a business niche scare you. According to Roget's 21st Century Thesaurus (1999), the word niche is also synonymous with the words "calling" and "vocation." Sounds like a very good thing to us.

Good luck finding the perfect home business opportunity!
