The Benefits of Working from Home
The Top 10 Reasons to Start Your Own Home-Based Business
You've thought about having your own home business for quite some time now, but you can't help but wonder, "Will it be as great as I imagine it might be?" One thing is for certain, you'll never know unless you try. If you need a little encouragement to begin the journey towards starting your own business, read on to discover some of the advantages of working from home.
Do work that excites you. Maybe you already have a job that allows you to be involved in work that you truly enjoy. Unfortunately, many people do not. Regardless of your current job level satisfaction, working for yourself from home provides you with the potential for even greater enjoyment of your chosen profession. Who can resist that?
Set your own priorities. Is making money the most important objective of running your own business? Do you believe that providing extraordinary customer service is the utmost goal for your daily operations? Is there a unique contribution that you want to make to the world that motivates you to manage your home business? Whatever your goals are, being self-employed allows you to decide the main mission associated with your work, as well as how to best pursue such aspirations.
Set your own schedule. Setting your own priorities also presents you with the opportunity to decide your own work schedule. Full time versus part time…it's your choice. Do you need to vary your schedule on a daily basis due to such factors as family commitments or physical constraints? A home-based business can provide you with the flexibility that you're seeking.
Lower your expenses. How's that, you ask. Being apprehensive about the lack of a regular paycheck is a logical concern. However, working at home can mean reduced travel expenses (e.g., gas, transit fares), fewer food expenditures (e.g., those tempting lattes, donuts, and sandwiches from the corner café), and a reduction in wardrobe costs (e.g., dry cleaner fees, expensive suits). Depending on the business you choose to pursue, you might still have to travel, eat on the road, and dress up every now and then, but the likelihood is such expenses will be reduced. A home office also generally has lower overhead costs associated with it than renting, leasing, and/or purchasing facilities to conduct your work. There are even tax advantages to maintaining a home business.
Have more time to pursue other interests. Setting your own work schedule and potentially spending less time traveling can add precious time to your day to engage in other activities besides work. Whether you're interested in taking a yoga class, singing in the church choir, or simply finding time to catch up on your reading, being self-employed can equate to more moments of self-fulfillment.
Become more involved with your family, friends, and community. Not all of your newfound free time will potentially be spent on yourself. Maybe you've been yearning to become more involved in your children's after-school life. Have you longed to have lunch with your friends, but you never had the flexibility to do so because your scheduled break was a mere half-hour long? Is volunteering at the local food pantry something that you've always wanted to do but couldn't simply because your work schedule didn't allow it? A home-based business presents you with the chance to expand your before, during, and after-work activities.
Be more productive. With a heightened desire to do the work that awaits you, potentially fewer interruptions, and less time spent on the road, you might be pleasantly surprised at your increased output. There's motivation like none other than when one works for oneself.
Be a happier person. Face it…there's nothing like working for yourself. A bad day spent self-employed is usually better than most days spent working for someone else. A home business can truly work wonders for improving your overall mental health. Even during its worst moments, your sense of self-worth will increase every time you're able to overcome the challenges associated with being your own boss.
Be a healthier person. Being happier generally equates to being healthier. However, there's no denying that there will be stressful days, weeks, months, and maybe even years of operating your home business. However, if you've done your research before embarking on your own, the benefits will far outweigh the negatives and the stressors will be fewer than if you were working for someone else. You'll probably sleep better, eat better, have more time to take care of yourself, and generally feel better about the direction that your life is heading.
Control your own destiny. While many people would argue that we always have control over our own destiny, there truly is nothing like the feeling one gets when they are in command of their own daily work life. While we really are so much more than our jobs, we still find a great deal of our self-worth in the work that we do and the potential contributions we make towards creating a better world. Identifying one's strengths and desires and then turning them into a marketable business is a risk worth taking for many individuals.
Being your own boss will undoubtedly present you with moments that will make you ask yourself, "Just WHAT was I thinking? Is this really worth it?" Just as often though, and perhaps even more than you might expect, you'll be wondering, "Why didn't I do this sooner?" Research your home-based business idea thoroughly and soon you'll be on the path to a successful career that you once thought was possible only in your fondest dreams.
